Istikhara begins with sincerity: setting aside distraction and turning to Allah with an open heart about the matter at hand.

The traditional method, as taught by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, is to pray two rak’ahs of voluntary prayer with the intention of Istikhara (this can be combined with any nafl prayer, such as the two rak’ahs before Fajr or after Isha). After completing the prayer, the specific dua of Istikhara is recited, mentioning the matter by name where the dua allows.

A person then proceeds with whichever option feels most reasonable and permissible, trusting that Allah has guided their heart toward what is genuinely good for them, even if it isn’t what they initially hoped for.

The correct response is to proceed with whichever option is most reasonable and permissible, continuing to trust that you have sought guidance the way you were taught to, and that Allah has answered, even if you cannot always perceive exactly how.
